Type 1 versus Type 2 NPIs

NPPES distinguishes individuals from organizations. ProviderFront preserves that distinction because the same change can have a different commercial meaning depending on the entity type.
Type 1: individuals
A Type 1 NPI identifies an individual healthcare provider. A new or updated Type 1 record may be relevant to recruiting, network development, staffing, or specialty analysis. It should not be treated as proof that the person opened a practice, works at a particular location today, or is accepting patients.
Type 2: organizations
A Type 2 NPI identifies an organization such as a group practice, facility, laboratory, pharmacy, or another organizational healthcare provider. Subparts may receive separate NPIs. Similar names or shared addresses do not, by themselves, establish ownership or control.
Why analysis should not merge them
ProviderFront can show related records only when the public evidence supports the connection. It does not silently turn a Type 1 record into a practice, or infer an employment relationship from a shared address. Market totals and watchlists expose entity-type filters so users can decide which signal fits their workflow.
